Lancaster County, PA House Explosion

A Lancaster County, Pennsylvania house explosion occurred in Manor Township on July 2, 2017, resulting in the death of a UGI employee and injuries to two other UGI workers. The explosion was triggered by a suspected natural gas leak, and the National Transportation Safety Board(NTSB) took over the investigation. The blast destroyed the house and caused damage to nearby homes. 

  • Cause:The explosion is believed to have been caused by a natural gas leak, according to news reports. UGI employees were responding to a reported gas odor when the blast occurred. 
  • Injuries and Death:One UGI employee was killed, and two others were injured. Fox 43 reported that the two injured employees were hospitalized but expected to fully recover. 
  • Damage:The house where the explosion occurred was destroyed, and nearby homes suffered damage, including broken windows and flexed garage doors. 
  • Investigation:The NTSB is leading the investigation into the explosion. The American Public Gas Association reported that the NTSB determined the blast was caused by gas that leaked from a retired Aldyl A plastic service tee
  • UGI Penalties:UGI faced a $2 million penalty for the incident due to alleged failures in following proper procedures and maintaining adequate safety protocols.
